Unfinished...

...are any of us really finished? My alter ego unfinishedperson examines this very question on his blog in a linear fashion: body, mind and soul. Here, however, no such constraints exist for me, with the only rule to keep ramblin', ramblin', ramblin'.

Thank God for the rabbits and our house. Amen.

On one of the walls In the hallway of our church is a bulletin board where comments from kids are put up in responses to questions they are presented in Sunday school.

Last week I saw responses to this question:

When Noah and his family left the ark, the first thing Noah did was build an altar and offer thanksgiving and offer prayers of thanksgiving to God. After receiving Noah's act of gratitude, God never decided to destroy the world again.

Gratitude is an important part of your relationship with God. What have you thanked God for lately? What are you grateful for?

Now letting that sentence about God never deciding to destroy the world again go, because it should include a caveat at the end of "until 2012 when you and your family and your pets will have to seek shelter on ships in the Himalayas well before the Dec. 21 date just to be safe," I instead will share few of the answers given by the children, most of whom are in first through third grades.

Many of the answers included bunny rabbits (must be a cottage industry here in the woods of northcentral Pennsylvania about which I had no idea until now) and houses (of which there seems to be plenty on the market here, so I guess they're just glad their parents have one). However, these were the best four I saw:

"I am thankful for my cats. I am grateful for Jesus."

Important to note: He is thankful for his cats first and then Jesus.

"I am grateful for family, friends, baby, animal and a church."

What struck me most about this one was that baby and animal had no name. However, I stopped by to see to the Sunday school director earlier today after copying down these comments, and she told me that the mother of the girl, who wrote this, just had a baby this morning and as of last Sunday, he was unnamed. Still with many of the other children, at least singling out their animal by at least species, I thought she could have at least done the same, and mentioned it as a cat, dog or rabbit, which seem to be the only three species recognizable to these children. I know, a minor quibble.

"I thanked God for one of my toys. I am grateful for food."

For one of my toys: Hey, at least, he didn't say

"I thanked Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior, for all of the toys he brought me last Christmas."

However, I agree with him about the food. I also am grateful for food, and maybe a little too much as I'm about 40 to 50 pounds over what I should weigh. I also am grateful for drink, especially this drink, on occasion:

Ämen.

But the No. 1 answer in my opinion was this one which came from, I believe, a first grade girl:

"Thank you for the animals. Thank you for the floors."
I am also thankful for ceilings myself, although I don't know if I'd go as far as this guy, Lanny, or the other folks on artist Fred Muram's website in expressing my gratitude for them:

So with Thanksgiving (at least here in the U.S.) this coming week, what are you grateful for?

Since I have a 6-year-old, I am trying to think of what the "floor" comment actually means. My kid writes stuff out phonetically or how she thinks it should be spelled. It's actually a pre-cursor to reading and her teacher will hand me all sort of gibbrish and I will be like "Oh, she is saying she doesn't like TREES not TEES." So I wonder what 'floors' mean inthis instance. Maybe she meant floods. Like what Noah experienced. Yeah, that's it. She grateful for the floods.

What am I grateful for? The obvious stuff but I am grateful for spell-check too.

I thought it might be "flowers" myself for which she was trying to go, but I'm not really sure. I just thought it was funny, I guess, in a cute kind of way.

The spell-checker comment? Was that directed toward me? Uh-oh, I thought I put this one through the spell checker. Did I miss something? In the feed will show up as "weight" instead of "weigh" at end of one sentence, but did I miss something else? Now you've got me being paranoid. Thanks. ;)

I'm thankful for posts like this, which is funny in a natural way and well written. I'm also thankful for floors and ceilings, but especially walls, without which I'd be falling over a lot of the time.

As an aside, I've seen a lot of posts referencing Jesus in the last week, including one of my own. Is that a coincidence, or are people just feeling religious as the holidays approach? Interesting.

There are tons of things I'm thankful for. My hubby, my family, my home, our boat, our dog Little Bit. The list is long. I do love how kids see things though. Out of the mouth of babes.

Have a terrific day. 8-)

Mike, thanks, I try, and I forgot about all the walls, which are somewhat important too.

On your aside, I don't know what it is, but many of us aren't as privileged as you to have Jesus stop by and have beer and pancakes with us as you...or if we do, we don't recognize that God, whatever you conceive Him or Her to be (to paraphrase the Desiderata, is there with us at the time.

Okay, I'll get off my soapbox now. :)

We don't have children ourselves (by choice), so I'm always struck by their perspective on the world. I as well am thankful for my wife, our home, our cat Seamus, and, yes, the list is long.

I'm thankful for days when I DON'T have migraines.

I'm thankful my Dad and I are getting along a lot better these days then we did when I was a kid.

I'm thankful for clean underwear and soap-- especially when they're used by people who are standing in line ahead of me.

I'm thankful for almost anything involving chocolate.

Is that your hand in that photo? It looks kind of girly. I hope it's your wife's.

Oh..and this was a funny post. And I changed out answering machine for you....dork.

The photo is from Wikipedia. If you click through the photo, it will take you to link.

Thanks for changing answering machine...now maybe I'll change mine too. Or maybe I'll just leave, because new one could be mocked even more...

1. I don't get migraines but allergy headaches so hear you. Today headache, but I think that's from wine last night.

2. Good family relations, always a good thing. Check.

3. Live in the sticks...so hear you on that one. Not thrilled when person in front of me came right from the dairy barn.

4. Oh, yeah. Peanut butter and chocolate for me too.

Right back at ya...on the blogs...and kids are great (of course, I can say this since we don't have any :).

Padded walls are good...not that I really know. ;)

But seriously, same here.

Although my thankfulness was expressed in October, when the REAL Thanksgiving takes place, I am thankful for the days when I DON'T have a migraine, and for the days when my kids DON'T make me drink myself to oblivion.

I'm thankful for funny blogs too! I love all the kids' answers, especially floors. Think about it. Where would we be without floors? In the basement, I suppose.

Love that your sis mocked you about the girly hand. I bet she's thankful for brothers who don't kill her.

You think that's the REAL Thanksgiving. You probably think Orthodox Christmas is REAL too right? ;)

Unfinished Rambler said...

Could be "flowers." I thought of that too. But it was funnier this way. 8-)

Funny thing is about the hand: I have hands very similar to that one. I have small, girlish hands. I'll admit it.

I love it. Art was right... kids DO say the darndest things!

I understand why that girl was thankful for just "baby." She probably didn't know what species it was.

Unfinished Rambler said...

I knew as soon as I saw the comments, that I had to use them in a blog post. They were too funny, especially that girl's. No, I doubt she knew what species it was, but her dog, cat or rabbit. I mean, she should have a clue by now what IT is.

I'm not grateful for rabbits. I do like our dog, though.
